Cobras Shutout Patriots 1-0 in Double-OT

FLORENCE, S.C. – Senior Niko Tirkkonen's goal in the 105th minute of play lifted the Cobras to a 1-0 victory over local rival Francis Marion in men's soccer action on Wednesday night. The win moves Coker to 5-2 on the season.

In a very evenly matched contest, the Cobras and the Patriots found themselves deadlocked at 0-0 after 90 minutes of regulation, sending the match into overtime. Through one extra period the score still remained even and it took still more time to decide a winner.

Tirkkonen's game-winner, his second of the season, came off an assist from Carlos Recinos on a shot from 11 yards out in the second overtime period.

Goalkeeper James Sweeney made five saves, earning his third straight shutout and fourth consecutive victory.

The Cobras return to action on Saturday (Sept. 29) when they travel to Banner Elk, N.C. to face Lees-McRae College in a Conference Carolinas match. Kick-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
