Hartsville, SC- The Belmont Abbey men’s soccer team used a strong second half to come away with a 3-1 victory over the Cobras.  Coker was able to control play in the opening half creating multiple scoring chances while limiting the Crusaders to only one shot.  The Cobras were able to strike first in the 22nd minute on a world class finish by Doug McMahen (Winter Springs, FL).  McMahen was able to connect on a header from about sixteen yards out on a beautiful out-swinging cross from Don Jackson (Bradonton, FL) giving the Cobras the 1-0 lead.  Play continued back and forth with neither team threatening the rest of the 1st half.

 

In the second half, Belmont Abbey controlled play and capitalized on multiple opportunities.  Brian Souza tied the game up in the 57th minute on a low line drive under Cobra keeper Joel Tyson (Irmo, SC).  The crusaders then took the lead for good in the 64th minute on a goal by Daniel Morrison created by Paul Goding.  Belmont Abbey was able to add another goal late in the half to give them a 3-1 lead and the victory.

 

With the loss, the Cobras fall to 5-6 overall and 2-3 in Conference Carolinas play, while the Crusaders improve to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in conference.  The Cobras return to the pitch on Saturday as they play host to Conference leader’s Lees McRae College at 5pm.
