WILSON, N.C. – Junior forward Scott Summers drilled four goals Saturday afternoon to pace Barton College past pesky Coker, 5-4, in a thrilling Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference men’s soccer match.

Summers’ last net-finder came with just 14 seconds left as Barton rose to 4-9 overall and 3-5 in the CVAC. Coker slid to 2-10 overall and 0-7 in league action.

Barton bolted to a quick 1-0 lead when Summers (Goldsboro, N.C.) scored off a pass from junior Randol Mendoza (Metairie, La.). The Cobras found themselves a man down less than 12 minutes into the match when Olivier Harper was ejected with back-to-back yellow cards for flagrant tackles.

The Bulldogs took advantage, scoring two more goals before half for a 3-0 cushion. Freshman Hector Bermudez (Warsaw, N.C.) tallied in the 14th minute off a Mendoza pass and Summers found the net on a 12-yard blast off a pass from Steven Shortt (Jacksonville, N.C.) in the 41st minute.

Freshmen Chris Freeman and Matthew Jarrett scored for Coker in the 48th and 69th minutes, then Freeman tied the score at 3-3 in the 71st minute.

Barton head coach Gary Hall got Summers back into the match in the 82nd minute, and seconds later, the speedy striker put the Bulldogs up 4-3 after taking a pass from junior Daniel Hileman (Raleigh, N.C.). He flicked the ball over a defender, then beat the goalie with a low shot.

Coker, not fazed by playing 10 vs. 11, countered in the 86th minute. Junior Sean Maupin served a free kick from 30 yards out on the right side and sophomore Jake Wyman soared above the crowd to head it past Barton goalie Matt Coble (Kernersville, N.C.)

Summers wasn’t about to be outdone. He took a midfield pass from sophomore Connor Bedgood (Wilson, N.C.) and again beat Coker goalie Nathan Scales from point-blank range at 89:46, setting off a wild celebration on the sidelines.

Barton finished with a 13-9 advantage in shots on goal. Coble, who played the first half and the last eight minutes, finished with one save and allowed just the one late goal. Teammate Michael Anderson (Raleigh, N.C.) yielded three goals and made two saves in 37 minutes. Scales came up with six saves for the Cobras.
