Cobras Edged by Railsplitters in Season Finale

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College men's lacrosse team was edged by the Lincoln Memorial University Railsplitters in their season finale Saturday (Apr. 22) afternoon by an 11-9 final score.

Lincoln Memorial had the momentum to begin the game with a 2-0 lead, until Brooks Long put the Cobras on the board with a well-placed bounce shot at the 7:40 mark of the opening quarter. The Cobras would find the back of the net one more time in the first frame of play, with a goal from Rylee Marsh and trailed Lincoln Memorial 3-2.

Next, the second quarter was similar to the first, as the Railsplitters outscored the Cobras 3-2. Vinny Magro found the back of the cage for both of the Navy and Gold's scores at the 14:34 and 9:02 marks of the quarter. Rylee Marsh and Garrett Kilgore were credited with the assists on Magro's goals.

The second half of action was a back and forth battle that had the Cobras come within one of the Railsplitters. Goals from Tim Wright and Garrett Kilgore in the third quarter made the score 8-6 in favor of Lincoln Memorial heading into the final frame of play.

During the fourth quarter, Brooks Long fired up the Cobra sideline by carving through the heart of the Railsplitter defense for the first score of the frame and brought the score the 8-7 in favor of Lincoln Memorial. However, the Railsplitters responded with back-to-back goals to extend their lead to three. Kilgore and Patrick Timothee went on to score two more goals for the Cobras in the tight loss.

Offensively, the Cobras were led by Garrett Kilgore, Brooks Long, Vinny Magro, and Riley Marsh, who all tallied three points during the game. Ryan Powell won the face off battle, winning 12 of the 20 face offs. As a team, the Cobras outhustled the Railsplitters and won the groundball battle by collecting 31, compared to Lincoln Memorial's 23.
