Cobras Edged by Catawba in Hard Fought Conference Battle

SALISBURY, N.C. – The Coker College men's lacrosse team was edged by Catawba 11-10 on Wednesday (Mar. 29) evening in a hard-fought South Atlantic Conference battle.

The first half of action between the Cobras and Indians was a back and forth battle that had Coker take a 6-5 lead into halftime. Catawba tallied the first score of the game, but the Navy and Gold responded with two consecutive goals to take a 2-1 lead. The first two goals from Coker came from Garrett Kilgore and Austin Holgate. Next, Kilgore would go on to score one more time in the first quarter to tie the game at three heading to the second frame of play.

Coker struck first to begin the second quarter when Lucas Hediger found Vinny Magro who ripped a shot into the back of the cage at the 12:07 mark. However, Catawba answered once again and notched the game back up at four apiece. Shortly after, the Navy and Gold regained the lead when Garrett Kilgore buried a shot past the goalkeeper for the hat trick. Next, Austin Holgate extended the Cobras lead to 6-4 when the long stick midfielder ripped a shot and scored on an extra man opportunity at 4:29 mark of the second quarter. Catawba added a goal before half and the Cobras held a 6-5 advantage at the midway point of the game.

During the third quarter, the Cobras were outscored by the Indians 4-1 and trailed Catawba 9-7 heading to the fourth frame. Garrett Kilgore continued his dominant offensive night with his fourth goal at the 2:29 mark of the third quarter. Coker tallied three goals in the fourth quarter; however, Catawba responded with two goals of their own and edged the Cobras 11-10.

Offensively, the Navy and Gold were led by Garrett Kilgore (4g) and Vinny Magro (2g, 2a). The Cobras will be back in action on Sunday (Apr. 2) when they host Mars Hill at 3 p.m.
