Cobras Prevail Over Tornados in Defensive Battle

BREVARD, N.C. – The Coker College men's lacrosse team prevailed over the Brevard College Tornados by a 5-3 final in a defensive battle Saturday (Mar. 11) afternoon. The victory improved the Cobras overall record to 2-3 and 1-1 in South Atlantic Conference play.

After Brevard tallied the first goal of the game, the Cobras responded with a goal of their own with 2:56 left in the first quarter from Denton Wilks. The Navy and Gold struggled to find the back of the cage during the rest of the first half and headed to halftime trailing Brevard 3-1.

Next, Coker dominated the second half of play by outscoring Brevard 4-0. The Cobras began their four-goal run in the fourth quarter with back-to-back goals from Garrett Kilgore. The Cobra attackman earned his first goal of the game unassisted at the 11:21 mark, and his second with 6:31 remaining in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 3-3. Vinny Magro was credited with the assist in Kilgore's second goal.

Magro followed his assist with two goals in the final minutes of the fourth quarter to seal the Coker victory. Magro notched his first goal at the 5:11 mark on a man-up opportunity and his second with just 12 seconds remaining in regulation. Denton Wilks dished out the assist during the final score of the game to finish with two points.

Anthony Malik had a stellar performance in between the pipes, allowing just three goals and collecting 11 saves for a 78.6 save percentage. As a team, the Cobras bested the Tornados in shots (29-18) and committed fewer turnovers (18-20). In addition, the Navy and Gold played well in transition by going a perfect 22 for 22 in clears.

The Cobras will be back in action on Friday (Mar. 17) when they travel to Shorter for a 7 p.m. start.
