Men's Golf Breaks 54 Hole Record, 2nd in VA

The Coker University men's golf team fired an 8-under par round of 280 on Tuesday afternoon at the Country Club of Petersburg to finish second to the host school, Saint Leo, in a 14-team event. All 4 counting scores for the Cobras were between 69 and 72. Saint Leo finished 14-under for three rounds and the Cobras were 3-under, breaking the 54-hole school record by three shots.

"Our guys really played well today," Coker head coach John Hackney said. "We were tied for second place and had a bunch of teams behind us and ended up in second, 13 shots ahead of third place. We also played even with Saint Leo, who has a great team, so it was nice to see that both of us shot 8 under. Our round really got jump-started on number 11 when we made 3 eagles and a birdie and played the hole 7-under par.  From that point on, the guys just played some really solid to wind up as the runner-up. Johnny had an excellent tournament, finishing second alone at 5-under par after shooting a 69 today. It was good to see our big man, Aaron Teece, put a 69 on the board as well today. Caleb Tidd had it 4 under at one point and finished at 70.

Our final counting score was a 72 from our super senior Killian Ryan. We actually dropped a 73 from junior Derek McGlaughlin. The other thing I was really excited about today was that we had to zero 3 putts among our counting scores, which is oustanding on fast greens. I just believe our guys are ready to go, and we're maturing more each and every round, so it should be a really exciting season!
