Men's Golf Wrap up Day 1 at the Griffin Invitational
PETERSBURG, VA -- The Coker University men's golf team is tied for second after the opening two rounds of the Griffin Invitational, which is being played at the Country Club of Petersburg.
Host Saint Leo University of Florida leads at 6-under par while Coker and Golldey-Beacom of Delaware are deadlocked for second at 5-over par. The Cobras fired an even-par round of 288 in the first 18 holes on Monday and carded at 5-oer 293 in the afternoon.
Senior Jonathan Hallinger of Sweden paced the Cobras with identical rounds of 71 for a 2-under 142, good for a tie for 5th place. He had two eagles and four birdies and was a perfect 7-for-7 in up-and-down par saves in the first round. He also needed just 57 putts over two rounds.
Senior Killian Ryan rebounded from a first-round 76 to shoot 3-under 69 in the afternoon (he was six-under through nine holes) and stands tied for 14th at +1 overall. Ryan, who struggled with driving accuracy in the first round, got it going later and notched 10 birdies overall.
Junior Derek McGlaughlin fired 71-76--147 (+3) and had seven birdies. Senior Aaron Teece tallied five birdies en route to rounds of 72-77-149 (+5) and junior Caleb Tidd shot 74-77-151. Playing as an individual in his college debut, freshman Andrew Perry posted rounds of 82 and 78.
"The course played very long today since it rained 1.5 inches overnight here," Coker head coach John Hackney said. "Players were spinning balls quite a bit so there weren't as many close putts as usual from the participants, and thus very few low scores. A gusting wind also made it difficult for guys to go low.
"I still believe there are low scores out there, evidenced by how deep Killian was going through nine holes in the second round, so hopefully we will roll in some more putts and make a run at the leader on Tuesday. Our guys are really good, so for us to have to count two scores in the mid 70s in the afternoon was not very stellar. I can't wait for us to fire on all cylinders because it will be a thing of beauty!"
