Men's Golf Fifth After Day One of Spring Kickoff

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL- The Coker University men's golf team wrapped up day one at the Spring Kickoff held at the Saint Johns Golf and Country Club. The Cobras had a strong showing in day one competing against ranked programs.

Coker currently sits in fifth place the remainder of the second round being postponed until tomorrow due to darkness.

Killian Ryan finished round one shooting a 73 (+1). Caleb Tidd sits in ninth place after shooting a 74 (+2) in round one. Coleman Bess shot a 78 (+6) while both Fred Tindale and Michael Finnegan shot a 79 (+7).

"The guys played well today under some extremely tough conditions. We started out with temperatures in the 30s and windy and played on exceptionally fast greens, which wreaked havoc on most of the player's games," said John Hackney.

"The guys continued to battle hard and when the 1st round was over we found ourselves in the top 5 because of their willingness to be patient and wait for the game to come to them. Killian had a nice round with 3 bogeys and 2 birdies and maintained a position in the top 10 all day.  Caleb struck the ball beautifully all day but struggled with this putting in the 2nd round. There are lots of 3 putts and more from players throughout the field because the greens were running about 13 on the stamp meter but luckily we play Hartsville Country Club which has fast greens so I believe that was helpful for us."

"We have a good 2nd round going and we have to complete the last 4 holes of the second round early in the morning but we currently stand tied for 4th out of 22 teams so we're looking to make a run for the title with a great performance on Tuesday," said Hackney.

" Through 14 holes in the 2nd round Killian is even, Coleman is 1 over and Fred and Mike are 3 over so we're 7 over as a team and 23-over overall after 32 holes. This is a great field of teams so it'll be nice for us to show we're ready to battle against the best division 2 teams in the country this spring."
