Cobras Fall to Newberry in SAC Road Matchup

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Coker College men's basketball team dropped a South Atlantic Conference road contest 98-69 to the Newberry College Wolves on Wednesday night (Feb. 24).

The two teams traded buckets in the opening six minutes, with a Jake Barrett made free throw cutting the Newberry lead to two, 10-8. However, four made threes and a pair of free throws by the Wolves over the next two and half minutes extended their lead to 24-14. They continued their sharpshooting ways throughout the rest of the first half, shooting over 50 percent from downtown and taking a 43-32 lead into the locker rooms at half.

The Cobras failed to cut the lead to single figures at any point in the latter 20 minutes, leading to the eventual 98-69 win for the Wolves.

The Navy and Gold had four players score in double figures led by the 17 bench points of Barrett. He also pulled down four rebounds, swiped three steals and dished out two assists. Donte Samuels went 6-7 from the field, scoring 16 points and recording four steals. Aubrey Daniel and Trey Marshall each had 10 points, Daniel collecting seven rebounds, while Marshall had four rebounds, three assists and two steals as well. Jalen Watson rounded things out with nine points, four rebounds and three blocks.

The Cobras return home on Saturday (Feb. 27) when they host Carson-Newman on Senior Day. In addition it is also Make-A-Wish Day. Fans are encouraged to wear blue in support of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m. at the DeLoach Center. Tickets for the game are $5 for adults, $3 for students and free to all Coker faculty, staff and students.
