Coker Drops Heartbreaker to Newberry 95-92

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Julian Nelson and Larry Felder combined for 44 of Coker's 92 points in the Cobras' 95-92 loss to Newberry College on Wednesday (Jan. 22) night.

Both Nelson and Felder scored 22 points and reeled in seven rebounds to lead the Cobras, while Errick Bethel poured in 17 points, 15 of which came from 3-point range. Eren Moses pulled down a game high 11 rebounds and added eight points for Coker as well.

It was a highly physical game from start to finish, as the Cobras and the Wolves combined for 55 personal fouls. The Wolves took advantage of the fouls scoring 34 points from the charity stripe, while the Cobras struggled from the foul line hitting just 48.3 percent of their shots.

Coker held a 43-37 lead at halftime, but Newberry slowly chipped away at the lead, and thanks to a 10-3 run they took a 61-60 lead with 10 minutes left in the game. The Cobras stayed within striking distance and with just over five minutes left they trailed by just one, 69-68.  The Wolves took as much as an eight point lead, but thanks to a Nelson 3-pointer the Cobras cut the lead to just two points, 89-87, with a minute left. 

Newberry hit five of six free throws to take a 94-87 lead with six seconds left.  A lay-up by Moses and another three ball from Nelson made it a two-point game, 94-92, with three seconds left. The Wolves knocked down their final free throw of the game secure the win, 95-92.

The Cobras will be back in action on Saturday (Jan. 25) at home against Tusculum College. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. It will be Let's Can Hunger Night at the games sponsored by Enactus. Fans bringing two or more non-perishable food items will receive free admission to the games.
