Lynchburg, Va. – In the final seconds of play Jason Flagler hit a jump shot and gave the South Carolina State Bulldogs a 66-64 win over Coker College in the consolation game of the Liberty Thanksgiving Classic.

In the down to the wire battle, Coker’s Josh Poston (Myrtle Beach, SC) drilled a three-pointer with just 12 seconds remaining to tie the game at 64. Then with 10 seconds remaining SC State called a timeout and put together the play that would eventually win them the game.

The Bulldogs, Coker’s third Division I opponent of the year, looked as if they may suffer the same fait as Coastal Carolina did earlier this year, as the Cobras led by six, 33-27, as they entered half time. Coker also led by as much as 11 points with 18:13 left in the second half, but they were unable to come out on top.

The Cobras forced 23 Bulldog turnovers in the game, compared to their 12 turnovers, while SC State dominated the boards, 46 to 22. Coker did control the game outside the arc, shooting 11-for-21 from three-point land, but the Cobras only shot 43.1 percent from the field.

Leading the Cobras was Poston with 16 points with four rebounds, while Vatrick Thompson (Columbia, SC) netted 15 points, while grabbing three rebounds. Lukas Varga (Pawley’s Island, SC) was the third Cobra in double figures with 14 points and eight assists. The Bulldogs controlled the paint and held Coker’s big men to just eight total points, including just four from the Cobras leading scorer Mason Ambler (Atlanta, GA).

Jason Johnson paced the Bulldogs with 19 points and seven rebounds, with Flagler posting the only double-double of the game with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

The Cobras return home on Sunday, before returning to the road on Dec. 3, as they take on Conference Carolinas foe Barton College at 7:30 p.m. in Wilson, N.C.
