MOUNT OLIVE, N.C.Edward Kershaw scored 27 points and Chris LeBorious tallied a double-double with 26 points and 13 rebounds as Ohio Valley withstood a late rally to defeat Coker 91-83 Saturday in the consolation game of the 41st Annual Pickle Classic, hosted by Mount Olive College. Coker cut a 21-point second-half deficit down to four points in the final minute before Ohio Valley sealed the win at the free throw line.

Ohio Valley (1-1) used an 11-0 run to overcome an early five-point deficit, but Jason Fullwood’s four-point play sparked a Coker run as the Cobras tied the game 13-13 with 11:48 left in the first half. But Coker (1-2) would then go more than 10 minutes without a field goal as Ohio Valley led 39-25 at halftime. Kershaw and LeBorious had 13 points apiece in the first half.

Stephen Camberis recorded five of his game-high six assists in the first six minutes of the second half as the Fighting Scots took their biggest lead at 55-34 with 14:10 left in the contest. But Coker trimmed the lead to single digits as Ben Brim’s three-pointer and Mike Lowery’s basket pulled the Cobras within 62-53 with 9:38 remaining.

Ohio Valley built the lead back to as many as 16 points before Coker made one final run, sparked by steals by Brim on consecutive possessions. Brim’s three-pointer with 1:10 left brought the deficit back down to single digits and Fullwood’s three-pointer with 23 seconds remaining pulled Coker within 87-83. But Aleka Carr and Caleb Canton combined to hit 4-of-4 free throws to secure the win.

Canton also posted a double-double for Ohio Valley with 11 points and 12 rebounds as the Fighting Scots outrebounded Coker 45-33.

Brim led four Coker players in double figures with 16 points, while Fullwood added 15 points, Lukas Varga scored 14 points and Lowery finished with 13 points. Chaz Smith pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

Coker is off until November 27 when the Cobras travel to Charleston, S.C., to take on Division I Charleston Southern. Ohio Valley returns to action Saturday as the Fighting Scots play host to Mercyhurst.
