Mount Olive, NC- Melvin Creddle scored all of his 15 points in the first half and senior Victor Young became the second Mount Olive player this season to reach 1,000 career points as regionally seventh-ranked Mount Olive defeated Coker 77-57 in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference men's basketball Monday at Kornegay Arena.

 

Mount Olive (18-5 overall, 12-4 CVAC) jumped out to a 9-2 lead as Creddle and Young combined for three three-pointers in the first two minutes of the game. Coker (5-18, 4-13) pulled within a point as Mark Duncan hit a pair of three-pointers to cut the lead to 11-10 with 14:49 left in the half. The Trojans then built the lead to double digits as Montel Jones' basket ignited a 9-0 run.

 

Coker drew as close as six points before three-pointers by Creddle and Chris Bartley extended Mount Olive's lead to 30-19 with 4:34 remaining. Coker cut the lead down to single digits again, but Maurice Horton's putback at the buzzer capped a 9-2 run and gave the Trojans a 41-26 lead at the break. Mount Olive would lead by double figures the rest of the way.

 

Elijah Rouse, who was held to two points in the first half, scored eight of Mount Olive's first 12 points in the second half. But Coker stayed within striking range as Duncan and Ryan Fullwood each hit a three-pointer and Abram Ludd sank a pair of free throws to pull the Cobras within 53-42 with 12:50 left in the game.

 

Mount Olive then broke the game open with a 9-0 run, highlighted by back-to-back three's by Justin Melton, as the Trojans took their biggest lead at 64-42 with 10:04 remaining. Coker never got closer than 17 points the rest of the way.

 

Young, who entered the game with 993 career points, scored six points in the first half, but sat out nine straight minutes in the second half as the Trojans played their reserves with a 20-point lead. Young returned to the floor with just under five minutes left and reached the milestone with a pair of free throws with 1:29 remaining.

 

In January, junior Elton Coffield scored his 1,000th career point.

 

Rouse finished with 13 points, while Young and Melton added eight points apiece. Chuckie Jefferson pulled down a game-high seven rebounds ad Mount Olive outrebounded Coker 34-20. The Trojans shot 50 percent or better in each half and finished 30-for-57 from the field (52.6 percent).

Duncan and Fullwood paced Coker with 11 points apiece, while Michael Pierce and Blake Terrell added nine points apiece.

 

Mount Olive returns to action Thursday as the Trojans travel to Belmont, N.C., to take on Belmont Abbey in a CVAC match-up. Coker plays host to Pfeiffer Saturday at 4 p.m.
