ESports Sweeps Thursday Night Matches over Syracuse, Wayland Baptist

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Coker University ESports team defeated Syracuse in Open Division Hearthstone, before taking down Wayland Baptist in the NACE Overwatch Fall Cup Thursday night (Oct. 15).

Coker brought their Face Hunter, Pure Paladin and Resurrect Priest, while Syracuse brought Bomb Warrior, Secret Rogue and Control Priest. The first match was Coker's Face Hunter against Syracuse's Secret Rogue. Syracuse was able to play a Questing Adventurer on curve and Coker was unable to deal with it. In just two turns, their one card was able to do 16HP to win the game. Game two was Coker's Pure Paladin against Syracuse's Control Priest. Coker was able to make multiple high stated minions that Syracuse was unable to deal with, giving the win to the Cobras. Game three was Coker's Face Hunter against Syracuse's Bomb Warrior. Coker was able to chip away at Syracuse's HP and find 18 damage on turn six to win the game. Game four was Coker's Resurrect Priest against Syracuse's Bomb Warrior. Even though Coker drew seven bombs, doing five damage each, they were able to heal past the damage to win the game and the match 3-1.

The first map was Lijiang Tower and the point was traded back and forth a couple times, but Coker was able to win the map with round scores of 100/63 and 100/83. Round two was Junkertown and Coker started on the offense and was able to complete the map with 1:43 left on the clock. Wayland Baptist then also pushed through the map but it took them their entire time bank. For the second half of the map, Coker had more time to push and they used the time wisely to win the second map. The third map was King's Row and Coker was stopped early but was able to rally back to push through the map with 45 seconds left. Coker was then almost able to stop Wayland Baptist at the first point but they were able to cap in overtime. Wayland Baptist was then stopped short of the second point giving Coker the match win at 3-0.

The Cobras return to action on Saturday (Oct. 17) for Peach Belt Conference Overwatch competition. The Cobras will face Georgia College at 3:00 p.m., before taking on Hawaii Pacific at 5:00 p.m. Video for both matches will be available at www.cokercobras.com.
