Cobras Drop Doubleheader to Trojans

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - The Coker baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader on Saturday (Feb. 19) to Mount Olive. The Trojans took game one 10-0 and won game two 11-10.

In game two, the Cobras fell behind two runs in the first inning, but battled back to draw even in the second. Brady Jeffcoat singled with one out and then came around to score on a two run blast from Nick Leonard to tie things up at 2-2. Back to back hit batsmen gave the Cobras runners on first and second before Tristen Melvin tripled in both runners to give Coker a 4-2 lead. They would add on to that lead in the fourth inning, as Phill Griffor singled home Eli Hopkins and scored on a Trojan throwing error to increase the Cobra lead to 6-2.

Coker struck for two more in the fifth behind a Griffor RBI HBP and a wild pitch from the Trojans pitcher to make it 8-3. Mount Olive would utilize a six run sixth inning to take a 9-8 lead, but Griffor once again put the Cobras in front with a two RBI double in the top of the seventh for a 10-9 margin. The Trojans would tie things up in the bottom half of the seventh, then earn the walk-off victory in the bottom of the ninth.

Griffor, Leonard, and Melvin led the offensive effort for Coker as they accounted for four, two, and two RBI respectively. Hopkins registered two base hits and scored three runs in the losing effort. Reilly Hall and Jeffcoat added two hits each to the Cobra cause.

The Cobras will be back on the diamond this Tuesday (Feb. 22) when they host Catawba. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m., with live video and statistics available at www.cokercobras.com
