Baseball Drops Series to Mars Hill

MARS HILL, N.C.- The Coker College baseball team dropped Saturday's (March 31) South Atlantic Conference doubleheader to the Mars Hill University Lions. The Cobras racked up nine runs on 13 hits in both games on Saturday.

GAME ONE

Reilly Hall saw his on-base streak advance to 19-consecutive games recording a 1-for-4 game with a RBI and run scored. Additionally, Matt Swiderski and RJ Ball collected two hits on the afternoon.

The Cobras scored twice in the top of the second inning to take the lead over Mars Hill. Larry McCabe got the rally going as he was plunked by pitch. After a groundout and fielder's choice, Charlie Burguieres stood on third with two away.  Reilly Hall put together the go-ahead at-bat with a double to center field.  Next, Hall moved to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a Swiderski single to left to put Coker up 2-0.

Coker tabbed another run in the third to make it 3-0. Connor Cleary was hit by a pitch to lead things off and with one out, McCabe was beamed for the second time. RJ Ball then connected on his first double of the game, driving home Cleary.

Mars Hill fought back in the bottom half of the third with a five-run inning and another run in the fourth.

The Navy and Gold scored three more runs in the contest, two in the fifth, one in the eighth.

McCabe worked his way on base for the third time without making contact, drawing a two-out walk. Then Ball ripped his second double to the gap in right center plating McCabe. Next, Burguieres reached on a throwing error that allowed Ball to score.

Later in the eighth, Robert Wilkerson reached on another error by the Lions' second baseman and moved to third on a Swiderski single through the right side. Bryson Conner then lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield scoring the sixth run for Coker for the game.

GAME TWO

Coker dropped game two to Mars Hill by a score of 10-3. Charlie Burguieres supplied the only multi-hit effort for the Navy and Gold in the second game. The middle of the lineup for the Cobras collected the other three hits on the day.

Mars Hill took a 4-0 lead in the first inning and Coker would try to fight back with two runs in the second and one in the fourth, before ultimately falling 10-3.

Brooks Estrada led off the second with a double to center and scored on a Connor Cleary double to left. With two outs, Burguieres rocked a base hit to right scoring Cleary.

In the fourth with two outs, Crosby reached on a fielding error by the Mars Hill first baseman and moved to second on the play. Burguieres continued his spectacular day at the plate, shooting a run-scoring single back up the middle.

Coker baseball will return back to Tom J. New Field at Dave Schmotzer Stadium on Friday, April 6, as the Navy and Gold will host Lincoln Memorial. First pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 3:00 p.m. Video and live-stats can be accessed by visiting www.cokercobras.com.
