Coker Baseball Adds Six for 2016-17 Season

HARTSVILLE, S.C.- Coker baseball has signed six players to join its 2016-17 recruiting class. Cody Brown-Gordon, David Broom, Brooks Estrada, Patrick Wheeler, Matthew Tricer and Brady Shuey make up the batch of new recruits signed to call Tom J. New Field home.

Brown-Gordon is a transfer from Daytona State College in Daytona Beach, Fla. Before Daytona State Brown-Gordon was a member of the Gwynned Mercy baseball team, where he made nine appearances including two starts.

The junior pitcher is originally from Royersford, Pa. and the son of Kelly Ortlip. He plans to study criminal justice.  

Broom comes to Coker from Lake Norman Charter in Charlotte, N.C. Broom played his travel baseball for the SBA Canes.

He is a native of Charlotte, N.C. and the son of Randy and Monica Broom. He plans to study sports management.

Estrada is a transfer from Lake Sumter State College in Sumterville, Fla. Estrada was named a Mid-Florida Conference Academic All-American, as well as an NJCAA Academic All-American. In 2016 he had four doubles and one homerun, while driving in 15 runs, stealing two bags and scoring 15 runs. In 2015, Estrada hit .273 with one double and four RBIs. He also stole one base and scored six runs.

He is a native of Oakland, Fla. and the son of Bob and Tammy Estrada. He plans to major in business.

Wheeler comes to Coker from Holly Springs High School in Holly Springs, N.C. He was named to the All-SWAC (Southwest Wake Athletic Conference) first team in 2015 and he also was a 2015 participant in the North Carolina State Games.

The Fuquay-Varina, N.C. native is the son of Karla Wheeler and is undecided on a major.

Tricer comes to Hartsville from Fort Dorchester High School where he played for the Patriots baseball team. He was named All-Region Team MVP once.

The Summerville, S.C. native is the son of Matt and Susan Tricer and plans to study business.

Shuey journeys to Coker from Oakleaf High School where he played first base and pitched for the Knights baseball team. In 2016, he was a first team All-Conference first baseman for District 2-8A. He hit for a .340 batting average as a senior and fielded a perfect 1.000. On the mound he posted a 2-2 record in 42 innings, notching a 2.96 earned run average, two saves, 43 strikeouts and a WHIP of .980.

The Middlebug, Fla. native is the son of Robyn and Karl Shuey and plans to study biology.
