Wolves Take Two from Cobras

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker Cobras were defeated by the Newberry Wolves in their South Atlantic Conference double-header on Saturday (April 12) afternoon in college baseball action. The Cobras lost the first game 6-3 and then dropped game two 5-3.

Game one started off as a pitching duel between Coker's Adam Webb and Newberry's Cole Cromer. Neither pitcher allowed a run in the first three innings of action. Newberry finally broke through the Cobra defenses with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. The Wolves then tacked on two more runs in the sixth to take a 5-0 lead.

The Cobras got on the board in the eighth inning with a sacrifice fly by T.J. Giczkowski that scored Sammy Song. A two-run single by Song in the bottom of the ninth made it a 6-3 game, but that would be were the game would end as the Wolves shut down the Cobras to take home the victory.

Adam Webb (4-1) suffered the loss on the hill for the Navy and Yellow; he allowed five runs on seven hits in five innings of work.

Song drove in two runs, while Giczkowski had a pair of hits and drove in a run. Also collecting multiple hits in game one was Fico Kondla.

In game two, the Cobras were first to strike thanks to an RBI single by Will Winslow in the bottom of the second, giving Coker the 1-0 lead. The Wolves, however, quickly answered with three runs in the top of the third. Another Cobra run in the bottom half of the inning made it a 3-2 game. Newberry regained the two-run lead with a single run in the fourth, but the Cobras answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth to again cut the lead to one, 4-3. The Wolves plated their fifth and final run in the top of the sixth and held on to win the game and sweep the series.

Korbin Causey (1-1) was tagged with the loss. He allowed three runs on a hit in an inning on the hill.

At the plate, Winslow and Jarren Donato each drove in a run, while Song had a double and scored a run.

The Cobras will return to the diamond on Wednesday (April 16) for a non-conference game against GRU August at home. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
