HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Coker College's Fico Kondla and Zach Loraine have been named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association All-Southeast Region team. Both players were named to the second team, with Kondla making it as a first baseman and Loraine as a relief pitcher.
Kondla, a junior, has been the offensive leader this season for the Cobras. As of Tuesday, he is hitting .423 with three homers, a team-high 47 RBIs, 41 runs scored and a team-high 23 stolen bases. He led Conference Carolinas in average and was third in steals.
Kondla has been an integral part in the Cobras' run to the NCAA Division II Baseball National Championship. In the Southeast regional he hit .562 with five RBIs and four runs scored. His biggest moment of the tournament came in the Cobras' second game, against USC Aiken, where he had his name in both Coker runs. He knocked in the game's first run with an RBI single before scoring the game-winning run after leading off the bottom of the 10th with a double. Kondla was named to the all-tournament team for his efforts.
Originally from Miami, Fla., Kondla is a physical education and sport studies major with a concentration in exercise science at Coker. He is the son of Richard and Emelina Kondla.
Loraine, also a junior, has been a two-way player for the Cobras this year, serving as the designated hitter and the closer. In the Southeast regional he pitched 5 1-3 shutout innings, allowing three hits while striking out nine. He earned the win against USC Aiken and the save against Mount Olive College. At the plate he hit .421 with four RBIs, five runs and a stolen base.
For the season, Loraine boasts a 2.40 ERA with 15 saves and 65 strikeouts over 60 innings. His 15 saves are tied for best in Division II. Offensively, he has .331 average with three homers, 37 RBIs, 48 runs and 20 steals.
Loraine is from Lake St. Louis, Mo., and is a physical education and sport studies major with a concentration in exercise science at Coker. He is the son of Lance and Eva Loraine.
