HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Coker College's Zach Loraine has been named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Southeast pitcher of the week. Loraine, a junior, is the third consecutive Cobra to earn this honor. Senior Dan Meyer received the award last week; junior Andrew Goot was the recipient the previous week.
Loraine, a right-handed pitcher and the Cobras' closer, played a crucial role in Coker's run in the Conference Carolinas tournament. He threw in four of the six games, allowing just two runs over 11 1-3 innings with 10 strikeouts. Loraine earned two wins and a save, which came in the championship game over King College. He struck out his 10th batter of the tournament to notch the save and the conference championship for the Cobras.
For the season, Loraine has a 4-2 record with 14 saves and a 2.63 ERA. He has 56 strikeouts over 54 2-3 innings, and his 14 saves are the most Division II.
Loraine hails from Lake St. Louis, Mo., and is a physical education and sport studies major with a concentration in exercise science at Coker. He is the son of Lance and Eva Loraine.
The Coker baseball team (34-14) recently won the Conference Carolinas tournament. The Cobras defeated King, 6-3, in the championship game. They played six games in five days, winning five, to take home the title. The championship earned Coker its first-ever appearance in the NCAA regional tournament, which begins May 16.
