Coker Holds on for 7-6 Win Over St. Augustine's

CARY, N.C. – The Coker Cobra baseball team extended its winning streak to seven games on Tuesday (Apr. 9) with a 7-6 win over St. Augustine's College. The victory moves the Cobras to 25-11 overall.

The Cobras took a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth, but St. Augs cut the lead to just one with two runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Coker took a 7-5 lead after a run in both the seventh and eighth innings. The Falcons plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth, but the Cobras closed out the game with a pair of strikeouts to take home the 7-6 win.

Tyler Witzel (7-3) earned the victory with three scoreless innings of work on the mound. He allowed just three hits and had two strikeouts during the outing. Andrew Goot (1) picked up the save, going two-thirds of an inning with two strikeouts.

Brinley Griffin drove in two runs on two hits, while Keith Wolf and Frank Suarez each drove in a run to lead the Cobras at the plate.

The Cobras will return home for their next game. They will host Belmont Abbey in a three-game Conference Carolinas series on Friday (Apr. 12) and Saturday (Apr. 13). First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Friday and noon on Saturday.
