Coker Splits Final Day at Chowan, Takes Series 3-1

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Coker baseball team finished their opening weekend of play, splitting their final two games against the Chowan University Hawks on Sunday (Feb. 3). The Cobras won the first game of the day 11-3, but came up short in game two, losing 5-4.  The Cobras took home the series victory 3-1.

Junior transfer Hunter Ressler (1-0) was nearly unhittable in game one; as he picked up his first win as Cobra. He went six innings allowing just four hits with three strikeouts.

Brinley Griffin was the leading hitter for the Cobras, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored. Keith Wolf also had a pair of hits including a double with a run scored and Fico Kondla drove in two runs.

In game two, the Hawks held a 5-1 lead into the fifth inning. Coker mounted a comeback, scoring three runs over the fifth and sixth innings, but was unable to push across anymore. The Cobras struggled to get runners home, leaving nine men stranded during the game. 

Sophomore John Lauttenbach (0-1) was tagged with the loss. He allowed four runs on six hits in three innings on the hill.

Chris Spivey and Frank Suarez each drove in a run for the Cobras, while Chad Nader and Wolf each had a double. Zach Loraine also had a triple and scored two runs.

Coker will return home for their next game on Tuesday (Feb. 5) against Newberry. First pitch for the Cobras 2013 home opener is scheduled for 3 p.m.
