Coker Dominates Chowan in Season Opening Double-header

Murfreesboro, N.C. – The Cobra baseball team opened the 2013 season by scoring 33 runs over 14 innings, earing two wins over Chowan University. Coker won game one 13-8 and then the offense exploded for 20 runs in game two, winning 20-3.

In game one, the Cobras held a 2-0 lead heading to the bottom of the fourth, but the Hawks took a one run lead with three runs in the fourth. Coker responded with four runs on the fifth making it a 6-3 ball game. The Cobras added four the sixth and another three in the seventh for a 13-8 final.

Dan Meyer (1-0) earned the win on the mound. The left-hander went five innings, allowing three runs on six hits with six strikeouts.

Fico Kondla was the leading hitter, going 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and three runs scored. Frank Suarez also had multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The Cobra hitters drove in 20 runs on 16 hits in game two. Leading the way was Suarez with a home run, a double, six RBIs and two runs scored. Kondla drove in three runs and was 2-for-2, while Zach Loraine and Brinley Griffin were both 2-for-3 with an RBI. Loraine had a double and scored two runs, and Griffin scored three runs. Freshman Justin Blechle added a triple with an RBI and two runs scored, and Shea Bell was 1-for-3 with a double.

Right-hander Andrew Goot (1-0) went the distance on the hill, allowing three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts in six innings of work.

The Cobras will look to complete the four game sweep of the Hawks on Sunday with another double-header starting at noon.
