Cobras Drop a Pair of One-Run Games to Chowan

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker baseball team came up just short twice on Saturday, losing a pair of one-run ball games to the Hawks of Chowan University. The Cobras dropped game one 3-2 in 10 innings and then lost game two 6-5.

GAME ONE 

In the first game of their doubleheader, it took 10 innings in order to decide a victor; unfortunately it was the Chowan Hawks who came out on top, 3-2.

Chowan got on the board first with a run in the second inning, with Coker evening the game at one apiece in the fourth. The Cobras took a 2-1 lead with a run in the fifth, holding that lead until the top of the seventh when the Hawks tied the game at two. The score stayed even at two runs each until the tenth when Chowan plated their third and final run.

Freshman hurler Gabe Llanes (Miami, Fla.) (0-1) took the loss for the Cobras. He allowed one run in one inning of work with a strikeout and a walk.

Chowan's Ryan Moore (1-0) earned the win in relief going four innings allowing two hits with five strikeouts for the Hawks.

At the plate, Nathan Wilson (Milliken, Colo.) had a pair of hits for the Cobras, while Kurtis Baker (Arvada, Colo.) had a triple with a run scored and Taylor Martin (San Jose, Calif.) had a double with a run scored. Frank Suarez (Miami, Fla.) also had a hit with an RBI.

GAME TWO

In the second game the Cobras and the Hawks exchanged runs between the second and fifth innings leaving the game tied at two heading into the sixth. It was then hat the offense exploded with Chowan scoring four runs and Coker adding three, giving the Hawks the narrow 6-5 lead. Chowan held on for the win with a shutout seventh inning.

Andrew Goot (Oldsmar, Fla.) (0-2) suffered the loss for Coker, allowing six runs on five hits with three strikeouts in five innings on the mound.

John Deschamps (1-0) got the win for the Hawks. He threw six innings allowing five runs on five hits and Evan Hart (1) got the save with an inning of work.

Fico Kondla (Miami, Fla.) was the Cobras leading hitter in game with two hits, including a double and two runs scored, while Keith Wolf (O'Fallon, Ill.) had a double with two RBIs and two runs scored. Baker picked up his second hit of day and his second run scored as well.

The Cobras and the Hawks will complete their four game series on Sunday with another doubleheader beginning at noon.
