HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker Cobras held the USC Beaufort Sand Sharks to just one run on three hits in nine innings, but were unable to score a run of their own as they fell to 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon in collegiate baseball action.

In a slow hitting day for both teams there were a combined seven hits (3-USCB, 4- Coker) with just one run scored.

The lone run of the game came in the sixth inning when Clay Bonds reached base on an error and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by David O’Neil to give the Sand Sharks the 1-0 lead.

The Cobras threatened several times throughout the game, as they left seven men stranded, but they were unable to drive home the run.

Jonathan Gainey (Hartsville, S.C.) (2-4) got tagged with the loss as he was the pitcher of record when USCB’s unearned run scored in the sixth. Gainey tossed just one inning allowing no hits.

Stephen Richards (4-1) got the win for USCB going four innings allowing just two hits with a strikeout, while Alexander Graham (1) got the save by tossing a scoreless ninth.

Nick Fuoco (Palm Bay, Fla.) had two of Coker’s four hits with Matt Ammons (Chester, S.C.) and Tyler Witzel (Melbourne, Fla.) each getting one. Ammons hit was a double.

For the Sand Sharks, Spencer Jackson was 2-for-4 with a double, while Gabe Torres was 1-for-3 and O’Neil drove in a run.

Coker will be back at home again for a three-game Conference Carolinas series against Pfeiffer University starting with a doubleheader Saturday at noon and finishing up with their Senior Day on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
