HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker Cobras baseball team mounted a five run comeback in the bottom of the ninth inning of their game versus nationally ranked #8 Francis Marion on Tuesday afternoon, but it was not enough, as the Patriots walked away with a 9-5 win over the Cobras. The loss marked Coker final game of the 2010 season, dropping their record to 23-20 overall and 10-14 in Conference Carolinas play.

FMU’s Erik Summerville earned the win, going five innings allowing no runs on four hits with seven strikeouts, while Coker’s Matt Long (Florence, S.C.) (10-5) took the loss, allowing five runs on nine hits with a strikeout in five innings of work.

Brinley Griffin (Port St. John, Fla.), Drew Hardee (Rock Hill, S.C.) and Matthew Kearnes (Bay Shore, N.Y.) each had two hits with an RBI and a run scored, while Daniel Hiatt (Elwood, Ind.) had a double with an RBI and Jordan Buenting (Ankeny, Iowa) drove in a run.

Tyler Boyd led the way for the Patriots with three hits and an RBI, while Preston Shuey had a pair of doubles with an RBI and Josh Biggers had two hits with an RBI.

Even though the Cobras came up just a game short of making the Conference Carolinas tournament, it has been a successful year for the Coker baseball team. This season marks the Cobras first season above .500 in the last four years, they also celebrated the program’s 500th victory, including Coach Dave Schmotzer’s 500th victory at Coker. Coach Dave is now just four short wins from his 600th career victory as a collegiate head coach.
