Hartsville, S.C. – The Cobra baseball team picked up a 18-5 non-conference win over Newberry College on Tuesday afternoon thanks to a pair of four RBI performances from Trey Lynch (Florence, S.C.) and Trevin Taber (Chesnee, S.C.) and a seven strikeout pitching performance from Matt Long (Florence, S.C.).

The win improves Coker to 23-19 on the year, while Newberry falls to 12-25.

Long (10-4) not only had seven strikeouts in the game, but he also became the first Cobra pitcher in more than six years to earn 10 wins in a season. He picked up his tenth win in five scoreless innings of work, allowing just six hits.

To compliment Long’s pitching; Lynch and Taber lead the Cobra offense by driving in eight of Coker’s 18 runs. Lynch had three hits including a home run and a double with four RBIs and three runs scored, while Taber had four hits including a double, four RBIs and a run scored. Brinley Griffin (Port St. John, Fla.) and Daniel Hiatt (Elwood, Ind.) each had two hits with two RBIs and two runs scored; with Matthew Kearnes (Bay Shore, N.Y.) driving in two runs with a double and three runs scored for the Cobras.

Newberry’s Evan Brown (1-1) was tagged with the loss, going just one inning, allowing three runs on two hits with three walks.

Evan Darr had a pair of hits and a pair of RBIs to lead Newberry at the plate, while Jovan Rohena had two hits and an RBI. Chris Love had three hits including a triple and Jim Pollack and Roland Haskins each had two hits and a run scored.

Coker returns to the diamond on Thursday, when they travel to Columbia, S.C. to take on Benedict College at 6:00 p.m.
