HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College baseball team recently held a short skills clinic for local little leaguers before their three game series with Barton College. On Saturday, March 27, Head Coach Dave Schmotzer and his band of Cobras took time out of their normal pre-game warm-up routine to show the future baseball stars of Hartsville some of the finer points of the game.

“This was great day for the Hartsville Little League and Coker College,” said Schmotzer. “I love seeing these big guys (the Coker players) interacting and teaching these little guys. It doesn’t matter if you’re 5 years old or 25 years old, there is a certain way to play baseball and that is what we are trying to show these guys.”

More than 50 players from several Hartsville Little League teams participated in the clinic. Coach Dave and the Cobras showed the proper ways to catch and throw, as well has his favorite, the proper way to bunt. The day was capped off with a couple of trips around the bases at Tom J. New Field and a hot dog lunch for each player, while taking in the game between Coker and Barton free of charge.

“We love being able to give back to the community like this,” said Schmotzer. “It is a great way to teach these young players about the great game of baseball, while also exposing them to the college game and to Coker.”
