GAFFNEY, S.C. – The Coker College baseball team picked up their second Conference Carolinas series victory of the season on Monday afternoon, as the Cobras defeated the Saints of Limestone College 15-7 on Monday afternoon to take home the 2-1 series win.

The win improves the Cobras to 14-12 on the year and 7-8 in conference play, while Limestone falls to 10-12 overall and 5-7 in the conference.

Both the Cobras and the Saints opened the game by exchanging pairs of runs in the first inning, but Limestone broke open their half of the game with four runs in the third and another run in the forth to take an early 7-2 lead. But Coker was not ready to give up just yet, scoring three runs in the fifth, five in the sixth, two in the seventh, one in the eighth and another two in the ninth, the Cobras put 15 runs on the board. Along with a five inning shutout pitching performance from Coker reliever Tyler Witzel (West Melbourne, Fla.), the Cobras held on for the 15-7 victory.

Witzel (3-2) dominated the Saints hitters in his five innings of work, allowing just no runs, just two hits, while striking out six. Limestone’s Brock White was tagged with the loss, as he allowed four runs on four hits in just a third of an inning on the mound.

Brinley Griffin (Port St. John, Fla.) lead the Cobras offensive surge with a 3-for-5 performance that included two home runs, a double, three RBIs and two runs scored. Also parking balls over the fence in the game were Matthew Kearnes (Bay Shore, N.Y.), Trevin Taber (Chesnee, S.C.), Daniel Hiatt (Elwood, Ind.) and Jessie Crockett (North East, Md.). Kearnes finished the day with three hits, two RBIs and three runs scored, while Hiatt had a pair of hits and two RBIs and Taber and Crockett each drove in and scored two runs. Jordan Buenting (Ankeny, Iowa) also had two hits on the day with two RBIs.

Limestone was led by Josh Troutman’s 3-for-5 day that included a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Joe Maloney was the only other Saint with multiple hits, he was 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored.
