WILSON, N.C.-- The No. 2 seed Erskine College -- also ranked tied for No. 14 nationally -- advances in the losers bracket of the 2008 Conference Carolinas Baseball Tournament with a 3-2 victory over No. 9 seed Coker College on Friday afternoon at historic Fleming Stadium.

The Flying Fleet, with a 40-6 overall record, next face the winner of the No. 5 Anderson University/No. 7 Pfeiffer University game in another elimination game on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. in Fleming Stadium. The Cobras are eliminated from the tournament with a record of 19-31.

Erskine trailed 2-1 heading to the plate for the last time but made the come-from-behind victory with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth. After junior Matt Schneider (Greenville, S.C.) was plunked by a pitch, freshman Brandon Garrett (Woodruff, S.C.) hit a seeing-eyed single through the right side of the infield. Both runners advanced to scoring position on a wild pitch before back-to-back RBI singles to left field catapulted the Fleet into the lead. Junior Tyler Layton (Easley, S.C.) had the first single that scored Schneider while King poked the second single that drove in Garrett for the game-winning run.

Sophomore closer Huitt Scarborough (Anderson, S.C.) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to preserve the victory earning his sixth save of the season. Freshman middle reliever John Bolding (Pickens, S.C.) was credited with his first win of the season.

Senior starter Jesse Hatchell (Florence, S.C.) was tagged with the loss in a gutsy performance. Hatchell, who had already started for Coker in the tournament’s first game yesterday, went 8 2/3 innings with three strikeouts.

Sophomore Bryan Fogle (Lexington, N.C.) gave Erskine an early lead with a solo home run in the third. Fogle’s ninth blast of the season went over the left-field fence.

Coker tied the game with an unearned run in the fifth and took a 2-1 advantage on a junior Scott Amann (New Athens, Ill.) single in the bottom of the eighth. Amann collected a game-high three base hits.
