WILSON, N.C.--No. 9 seed Coker College (19-30) defeated No. 4 seed Barton College (27-28), 7-4, in an elimination game of the 2008 Conference Carolinas Baseball Tournament on Friday morning at Barton's Nixon Field. Coker later lost a 3-2 decision to Erskine to end its season in historic Fleming Stadium.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a single by Zach Boyette and a double by Michael Parker. However, the Bulldogs went in order over the next five innings against Coker starter Justin Collier (2-1). By the time Barton finally got on the board again, it was 7-2 in the ninth.

With one out, relief pitcher Sam Pepper ripped a solo homer to right. Travis Holloman followed with a single and scored on Allen Corbett's double. A strikeout and flyout ended the Bulldogs' season, and the careers of seniors Justin Bye, Quinn Fuller, Brent Godwin, Chris Hill, John Miller, Michael Parker, Jeremy Tucker and Travis Holloman.

Both teams finished with nine hits. Barton made three errors and Coker committed three. Coker counted one run in the first on singles by Trey Lynch and Julio Gomez and a throwing error. Barton went up 2-1 in the second when Jonathan Nichols was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a throwing error.

The Cobras took a 3-2 lead in the second on a walk, a single by B.K. Harfst and a two-run double by Preston Ford. The lead grew to 4-2 in the fifth on three walks and a throwing error. Coker added two runs in the sixth on a triple by Ford, a walk, a sacrifice bunt and a two-run double by Gomez. The Cobras plated their final run in the seventh. Poole was hit by a pitch, went to second on a groundout, to third on a Ricky Deleandro single and home when a pickoff attempt at third by the catcher went awry. No player had more than one hit for the Bulldogs while Gomez was 3-for-4 and Ford 2-for-4 for the Cobras. Both players had 2RBI.

Barton freshman left-handed starter Matt Watson (3-2) suffered the loss in 4 1/3 innings of action while Coker's Mikael Owens earned his sixth save.
