Hartsville, SC- Coker’s Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference woes continued on Saturday, as the Belmont Abbey Crusaders shut out the Cobras in their baseball double-header. The Crusaders won game one 1-0 and won game two 4-0. With the losses Coker falls to 18-29 overall, and 9-14 in the CVAC, while Belmont abbey improves to 31-14 overall, and 15-11 in the CVAC.

In game one, Coker was led by some outstanding pitching by Brad Boob (3-8), who allowed just one run on one hit with three strike outs and two walks.

Abbey was led by the pitching of Andy Helms, who earned the win throwing a complete game shut out allowing five hits with four strike outs.

Leading the Cobras at the plate was Brain Nally, going 2-for-4, while Ryan Schaeffer Eric Losten and Steven Evans each had one hit.

For the Crusaders, Seth Waller had their lone hit, while Patrick Atwell drove home the game winning run on a sacrifice fly.

Game two saw even more stellar pitching, but this time the Abbey bats gained some life. The Crusaders jumped out to an early 2-0 led in the first and did not look back.

David Rue earned the win, going five innings, allowing two hits with two strike outs, and Brett DiPasquale earned the save going two innings, allowing three hits with a strike out.

For Coker, Matt Conyers (5-5) took his second CVAC loss in consecutive weekends, going all seven innings, allowing four runs on nine hits with three strike outs.

Nally was again 2-for-4 leading Coker, while Schaeffer, Seth Weinberg and Brantley Bell each added a hit for the Cobras.

Tyler McKenzie, Nick Popp and Waller were each 2-for-3, while McKenzie had two RBIs and two runs scored and Waller and Popp each had a double, with Waller had an RBI.

The Cobras and the Crusaders will wrap up their three game series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Coker. Before the game Coach Schmotzer and the Cobras will recognize the 2007 senior baseball players.
