LAURINBURG, N.C.—The Coker College baseball team extended its season-best win streak to five games after winning both legs of a Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference doubleheader from host St. Andrews Presbyterian College by 10-5 and 12-5 scores on Saturday afternoon at Clark Field.

Junior Julio Gomez (Sante Fe, N.M.) had a team-high four runs batted in as the Cobras improved to 15-24 overall and 8-9 in the CVAC. Senior Ritchie Priest (Elizabethtown, N.C.), sophomore Ivan Rodriguez (New York, N.Y.), and junior Michael Eastwood (Grantsboro, N.C.) accounted for 17 of the Knights 26 hits on the afternoon as SAPC fell to 13-27 on the year and 3-14 in the conference. The two teams will conclude the three-game series on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Game 1: Coker 10, St. Andrews 5

Freshman Trey Lynch (Florence, S.C.) started a three-run rally for Coker in the top of the third with a leadoff single to left. Senior Ryan Schaeffer (East Islip, N.Y.) followed with single through the right side of the infield that scored Lynch for the first run. Senior Eric Losten (Chesapeake City, Md.) drilled a double in right field gap that plated Schaeffer and Gomez concluded the scoring with a single to left that sent Losten home.

Eastwood cut the SAPC deficit to 3-2 with an inside-the-park home run to center field in the bottom of the third.

Coker senior Brian Johanson (Charlotte, N.C.) had a run-producing triple to right-center in the fourth and later scored during a run down to extend the Cobra advantage to 5-2.

Rodriguez, who was a perfect 5-for-5 in the first game, lined an RBI-double in the fourth to pull the Knights within two runs, 5-3. Coker maintained that same lead after each team traded home runs in the fifth. Cobra senior Ben Davidson (Charleston, S.C.) blasted his team-high 10th down the left field line while Eastwood smashed his second straight blast to left. Eastwood has five homers on the campaign.

Coker broke the contest open with four unearned runs in the sixth. St. Andrews had five errors in the game including two dropped pop-ups in the sixth that led to the four-run surge. Losten and Gomez each drove in a run with a double in the extended frame.

The Knights final run came on a single by Rodriguez in the sixth that scored Priest. Both Priest and Eastwood had three hits in the opener.

Nine different batters had hits for Coker including two by both Losten and Gomez.

Junior starter Brad Boob (Charlotte, N.C.) went the distance for the Cobras earning his second victory of the season. Boob (2-6) allowed five runs on 14 hits while striking out two in the 126-pitch complete-game. Sophomore Ryan Kirkman (Liberty, N.C.) was charged with the loss after giving up five runs on five hits in three-plus innings of work. Kirkman (2-6) and freshman Jordan Cudney (Charlotte, N.C.) fanned four batters apiece.

Game 2: Coker 12, St. Andrews 5

Coker jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap. Schaeffer led off the game with a walk and scored on a double by Nally, who then scored on a double steal.

Eastwood drove in St. Andrews first run with a single up the middle in the first. Freshman Alex Ridout (Wake Forest, N.C.), who reached first on a fielder’s choice and stole second, scored on the play.

The Cobras built their lead to 12-2 with five runs in the second, one in both the third and fourth, and two more in the seventh. Back-to-back doubles to left field by Gomez and Davidson highlighted the second inning outburst. Sophomore Ty Medlin (Seneca, S.C.) completed the Coker’s scoring with a two-run double in the seventh.

Freshman Zack Dunn (Harrisburg, N.C.) supplied SAPC with its second run in the sixth on an RBI-groundout. The Knights never quit and scored three runs on their last at bat including a two-run double by junior Eric Stone (Laurinburg, N.C.) and an RBI-single by Priest.

All nine starters had a hit for the Cobras including a pair of base knocks by Nally and Medlin. Priest led the Knights with three hits in the second game including his third double of the day.

Junior Matthew Conyers (Woodruff, Ga.) pitched the second straight complete game for Coker in the finale. Conyers (5-3) allowed five runs (three earned) on 12 hits while striking out four. Senior Ryan Curley (Emmaus, Pa.) was charged with the loss for St. Andrews.
