Hartsville, SC- The Cobras split their Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference double-header with Anderson University on Friday in collegiate baseball. Coker won game one 9-8, thanks to some late inning heroics, but lost game two 13-1. Coker is now 16-29-1 overall, and 3-20 in the CVAC, while Anderson is now 21-32 overall, and 9-12 in the CVAC.

 

Game one was full of late inning heroics, as Anderson’s Jonathan Pitts hit a two out bomb over the field wall in the top of the ninth to tie the game at eight. Luckily for Coker, they had some heroes of their own in the line-up. To lead-off the bottom of the ninth Steven Evans hit a single  to the short stop and then advanced on a pass ball, next up was Brooks Urquhart who beat out bunt single and then Willie LoVerde got hit by a pitch to load the bases. That brought Brian Nally to the plate and he laced a 1-2 pitch into left center to score the winning run for the Cobras.

 

Steven Dill (3-5) earned the win coming on in relief, allowing one run on three hits, in two innings of work.

 

Anderson’s Brandon Johnson took the loss allowing one run on three hits in the ninth inning.

 

For Coker at the plate, Ben Davidson was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Nic Fletcher was 1-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored. Nally finished 1-for-5 with the game winning hit and RBI.

 

For the Trojans, Jonathan Pitts was 3-for-5 with a home run, a double, two RBIs and two runs scored, while Tony Graham was 2-for-5 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored.

 

In game two, Anderson got the scoring started early, with a run in the second, two in the third and two more in the fourth. Coker did not get one the board until the bottom of the fifth, when they plated their first run. The Trojans added their sixth run when Jessie Whiteside hit a solo home run over the left field wall, and they secured their victory by adding seven runs in the top of the seventh.

 

Coker starter Jesse Hatchell (2-4) took the loss, going three and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs on six hits.

 

Anderson’s Chris Pitts earned the win, throwing a complete game, allowing just one run on four hits, while striking out six.

 

At the plate for Coker, Carlton Deese, Willie LoVerde and Michael Shuford each collected a hit.

 

For Anderson, Kyle Lewis was 4-for-5 with a RBI and two runs scored, and Jonathan Pitts was 2-for-4 with double, three RBIs and two runs scored. John Mac White and Whiteside each finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, with Whiteside getting a home run and White a double.

 

The Trojans and Cobras complete their three game series tomorrow with game time at 12:00 p.m.
