Hartsville, SC- Coker battled hard for two games, but in the end came out empty handed as they lost to Barton College 9-5 and 10-9 in collegiate baseball Sunday. With the losses Coker drops to 2-18 in the CVAC and 14-27-1 overall, while Barton improves to 15-5 in the CVAC and 26-19 overall.

 

In game one, Coker fell behind early as Barton scored three runs in the first two innings. The Cobras scored a run in the third to cut into the Bulldog lead, but Barton added another run in the fifth for a 4-1 lead. The seventh inning was an offensive inning as Barton added five runs, but Coker rallied for three of their own in the bottom half of the inning.

 

Coker would manage a run in the ninth, but Barton’s was lead was already too great and the Bulldogs went on to win 9-5.

 

Brad Boob (2-7) took the loss for the Cobras, allowing nine runs on 15 hits in eight innings of work.

 

Barton’s Tim Bardin (1-2) earned the win throwing seven strong innings, allowing four runs on eight hits.

 

At the plate for Coker, Brian Nally and Seth Weinberg were each 2-for-4, with Nally hitting a double and scoring a run and Weinberg earning two RBIs. Brooks Urquhart was 3-for-4 with a run scored.

 

For the Bulldogs, Tyler Petty was 4-for-5 with a triple, four RBIs and a run scored, while Will Walmsley, Zach Boyette and David Bunn were each 2-for-4.

 

Game Two got started with a bang as Barton’s Jonathan Nichols hit a towering three run home run over the left field fence for an early 3-0 lead. Coker answered with a run in the second, but Barton would not be out done scoring two more in the third.

 

Barton continued their offensive dominance, scoring three more runs in the fourth, but this time Coker would answer scoring five runs in the bottom of the inning. Both teams scored a run in the fifth, making the score 9-7, before Coker added another run in the sixth, for a one run ballgame.

 

Barton tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh, but Coker mounted a come back scoring a run of their own, but the Cobras were unable to capitalize leaving a run stranded on third to end the game.

 

Seth Weinberg (2-3) took the loss for Coker, going three and two-thirds innings, allowing eight runs off seven hits.

 

For Barton, Brock Godwin (8-0) earned the win, going four and a third innings, allowing seven runs on 12 hits, while striking out six.

 

Offensively for the Cobras, Brian Nally was 4-for-5 with a double, three RBIs and a run scored, while TJ Dawson was 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and an RBI.

 

Barton was led by Will Walmsley, who was 3-for-4 and Tyler Petty, who was 3-for-4. Nichols finished 1-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs.

 

Coker and Barton complete their three game series on Monday, at 1:00 p.m. at Tom J. New Field.
