Hartsville, SC- The UNC-Pembroke Braves took advantage of Coker’s early defensive miscues and some hot bats in order to build a lead and eventually defeat the Cobras 12-8. With the loss Coker drops to 11-15-1 on the season, while Pembroke improves to 16-10.

 

Coker jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, when Brian Johanson laced a triple to right center and then scored off a Pembroke wild pitch. Unfortunately for the Cobras, UNCP would score 10 unanswered runs over the next four innings. Coker gained some ground in the bottom of the fourth when Steven Evans blasted a three-run homer over the left-center wall, but Pembroke would not be out done as they added two more runs to their lead in the top of the sixth, making it a 12-4 ballgame.

 

Coker cut the Braves lead to five in the seventh inning, scoring three runs off four hits. The Cobras then added their final run in the bottom of the eighth, making it a 12-8 final.

 

Coker starter Brad Boob (2-4) took the loss going four innings, allowing 10 runs on 11 hits, while Pembroke’s Jordan Carter (4-1) picked up the win, throwing seven innings, allowing seven runs on 10 hits with four strike outs.

 

Leading Coker’s offense, Steven Evans was 2-for-4 with a home run, four RBIs and a run scored, while Steven Dill and Ryan Schaeffer were each 2-for-3.

 

For the Braves, Barrett Otto was 2-for-4 with a triple, two RBIs and a run scored and Adam Hamrick was 2-for-5 with a triple and four RBIs.

 

Coker and UNCP finish up their two game series tomorrow as the Cobras travel to Pembroke, NC, game time is 12:00 p.m.
