Hartsville, SC- Coker narrowly defeated the Augusta State Jaguars by a score of 8-7 on Tuesday afternoon in collegiate baseball. Coker now improves to 11-14-1 on the year, while Augusta State falls to 8-13.

 

The Cobras were the first to strike, scoring a run in the second off a Seth Weinberg RBI single. However Augusta State would not be out done as they scored two runs in the top half of the third off two hits and a Coker error. The Cobras tied the game at two in the bottom of the fifth, but the Jaguars answered again, taking a one run lead in the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth Coker exploded for five runs off three hits and two big Augusta State errors, to take the lead.

 

Augusta State scored another run in the seventh, but Coker answered with a run in the eighth. With the score 8-4 as they entered the ninth inning, Augusta State made one last run at a win as they scored three runs on off two hits and an error, before Coker starter Jayson Clarke gave way for Larry Morris who picked up the last two outs with a game ending 6-4-3 double play.

 

Clarke (4-4) earned the win, going eight and a third strong innings, allowing seven runs on 11 hits, while striking out seven. Morris (1) earned his first save of the year, throwing two-thirds of an inning in the ninth.

 

Jaguar’s pitcher, Daniel Gwaltney took the loss, allowing five runs on three hits in two innings pitched, while striking out three.

 

For Coker offensively, Ben Davidson was a perfect 4-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Brian Nally was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

 

Augusta State was led by Alan Gregg, going 3-for-5 with an RBI and Justin Walker was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.

 

The Cobras return to the field on Friday, as they host UNC-Pembroke at 2:30 p.m.
