Hartsville, SC- In game one Erskine scored four runs in the top of the eighth to take the lead and the eventual win, as the Flying Fleet defeated Coker 4-1 in the first game of the double-header Saturday afternoon.

 

The Flying Fleet led off the eighth with back to back singles by JJ Newman and Shelton Cisson, bringing up Robbie Knapp, who hit a double down the left field line that scored both Newman and Cisson. Next came Matt Schneider hitting an RBI triple, giving Erskine a three run lead.

 

Coker would try and get a rally of their own going, scoring a run in the bottom of the eighth, but that would be all the offense the Cobras would generate.

 

Jayson Clarke (3-3) took the loss allowing four runs on nine hits, with four strike outs, while Erskine’s Mike Moore earned the win, allowing only one run on four hits, with six strike outs.

 

The Cobras were led by Ryan Schaeffer who was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Brooks Urquhart was 2-for-4.

 

Erskine was led by Robbie Knapp going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, and Matt Wurzer who was 2-for-3.

 

The second game turned out to be a back and forth battle, as Coker took an early 3-0 lead in the second inning, but Erskine would answer with three runs of their own in the top of the third. Coker would come right back in the bottom half of the inning scoring two more runs, but again Erskine would answer with four runs in the top of the fourth. Coker would get shut out in fourth, but would score a run in the fifth and a run in the sixth to tie the game at seven.

 

With the score tied in the top of the seventh Erskine’s Shelton Cisson hit a double, and would then score off a Matt Schneider triple to take the lead. The Fleet added seven more runs error to give Erskine a 15-7 victory.

 

Jesse Hatchell (0-2) took the loss for Coker coming on in relief in the sixth, while Erskine’s Jake Williams (1-1) earned the win coming on in relief in the sixth as well.

 

Coker’s offense was led by Kyle Strickland going 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Brian Johanson was 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored. Brantley Bell was 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Cobras.

 

For Erskine, Cission was 3-for-4 with two doubles, four RBIs and two runs scored. Robbie Knapp and Matt Schneider were each 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored. As a team Erskine had 14 RBIs on 15 hits.

 

Coker drops to 7-11-1 overall and 0-8 in the CVAC, while Erskine improves to 17-2 overall, and 4-0 in the CVAC after this weekend’s series.

 

The Cobras next match-up is against Vorhees College on Tuesday, March 7, at Vorhees College.
