HARTSVILLE, SC – The Coker College Baseball team took a pair from Limestone College Saturday afternoon in its CVAC opening series.  The Cobras won 10-3 in game one and came back for a 6-5 win in game two.

Coker (6-5, 2-0) scored in each of the first five innings and rode a solid outing from freshman pitcher Brad Boob/Charlotte, NC to cruise past the Saints.  Boob gave up only one hit through four innings and by that time the offense had given him a comfortable 9-0 lead.

Junior Nic Fletcher/Littleton, CO was the catalyst in the first inning, drawing a lead-off walk and then scoring on a sacrifice fly by senior Conrad Deese/Pageland, SC.  Eric Losten/Chesapeake City, MD scored later when Justin Sims/Westville, NY stole second and the catcher’s throw, allowing Losten to come in from third.

In the second, Dustin Dockter/Columbia, SC tripled to score Seth Weinberg/Sherwood, AR and then scored when the relay throw to third sailed into the dugout.  Coker put four more runs on the board in the fourth with a patient approach at the plate, drawing four walks and a hit batsman.

In game two, Limestone scored two in the first on a pair of RBI doubles, and three more in the fourth inning of a seven-inning contest.  The Coker bats finally came around in the bottom of the fourth to score two runs.

Fletcher tripled and scored on a single by Losten.  Losten stole two bases and then scored on a single by sophomore Brian Nally/Highland Heights, OH, and Ben Kershner/Wellington, CO tied the score at 5-5 on a sacrifice fly from Deese.

A scoreless sixth inning made for drama in the last frame, but Blake Miller/Greenwood, SC buzzed through the Saints in their half inning without any trouble.  In the bottom of the seventh, Kershner singled and then advanced to second on a passed ball with one out.  Nally, who finished 3-3 in the game, calmly stroked a single to right center to score Kershner from second.

Nally went 4-6 for the day with four RBI and a run scored and Kershner had two hits and four runs scored.  Sims finished 3-6 with two RBI and a run scored, and Deese picked up four RBI and a run scored.

Boob took the game one win, scattering nine hits with two earned runs allowed and three strikeouts.  Larry Morris/Earleville, MD pitched four innings in game two with five earned runs allowed before Miller came in for two innings of work.  Miller earned his first win of the year, allowing only two hits and no runs while striking out one batter.

Clary had four hits, one RBI and two runs scored for Limestone and Mitch House finished with two hits, a run scored and a RBI.

The two teams finish up the three-game series on Sunday, February 20, at 1:00 PM.
