
Coker Falls To Mars Hill Saturday
Lions use three sets to take down Cobras on senior day.
Hartsville, SC. - Mars Hill took down Coker in three sets Saturday afternoon. The Cobras were paced by Cayla Gilmore and Laila Hixon on the offensive side, while Meadow Morse led the defense.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Mars Hill took the first two sets from Coker 25-18 and 25-21. The Cobras were led by Hazar Kayan Elif's 10 kills throughout the first two sets. After falling down early, the Cobras put together a rally, but it was the Lions who eventually pulled out set one. In set two the Cobras once again fell down early, before rallying to pull the match within four points late. Mars Hill prevailed and took a 2-0 lead. Coker's Meadow Morse led the team on the defensive side through the first two with nine digs. Laila Hixon filled the stat sheet up 7 digs of her own, while also adding 12 assists.
In set three the Cobras jumped out to an early 8-7 lead, continuously showing fight. Cayla Gilmore spiked back to back kills for the Cobras before Meadow Morse served an ace to give Coker a 16-11 lead halfway through the third. Following a Mars Hill timeout, three of the next five points, taking a commanding 19-13 lead. The Lions stormed back over the next three points, bringing the set within three at 19-16. Meadow Morse then made a phenomenal dig to swing the momentum back to the Cobras. The Lions roared back from that point on, taking down the Cobras 25-23 in set three.
Coker was led by freshman Cayla Gilmore with 12 kills on the offensive side, while Morse was the standout on defense with 19 digs. Elif added 11 kills of her own, while Hixon registered 15 assists.
