Volleyball Falls to Newberry in Straight Sets

NEWBERRY, S.C.- The Coker University volleyball team fell in straight sets (3-0) at Newberry on Friday (Nov. 1).

The Wolves took the opening set 25-10 for a 1-0 lead. The Wolves earned an early 14-5 lead over the Cobras. Coker's Seirra Harvey would have a kill to start a 4-0 run for the Cobras, but Newberry would continue to extend the lead to win the set 25-10.

Newberry would barley win in the second set by a score of 25-22 for a 2-0 lead. Coker's Taylor du Bray would have the first kill of the set with the assist from Ashley Carson, and the Cobras would go on to take a 3-1 lead. Newberry would come back to take a 15-14 lead in the set. The two teams would continue to battle back and forth until the Cobras scored four straight to give them the 17-14 lead. Newberry would ultimately win the match by a score of 24-22.

Coker's du Bray would earn the first kill of the third set off the assist from Carson, but Newberry would take an early 14-11 lead. Coker would then answer when Payton Jackson earned a kill, and the Cobras went on a 5-0 run making the score 19-20.  The run would end when Newberry's Toni-Anne Whitlow earned a kill, and the Wolves would go on to win the set 26-24

Taylor du Bray led the Cobras with eight kills, while Emily Everton was close behind with seven. Camryn Tate led in digs with 13, while Rami Mullen finished with nine.

The Cobras are back in action on Saturday (Nov. 2) at Anderson for a South Atlantic Conference contest. First serve is set for 2:00 p.m.
