Volleyball Drops Conference Match to No. 22 Wingate Tuesday Night

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Coker University volleyball team fell in South Atlantic Conference action to No. 22 Wingate by a score of 3-0 on Tuesday (Oct. 22). 

No. 22 Wingate took the opening set 25-15 to go ahead 1-0 in the match. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the set, before the lead would eventually grow to 16-8. The Cobras would win five of the next seven points to cut the deficit to 18-13 and force a Wingate timeout, before the Bulldogs would close the set with a 7-2 run of their own. 

The Bulldogs would win the second set by an identical score of 25-15 to take a 2-0 lead in the match. The Cobras jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the second set, before the Bulldogs would come back to eventually tie the set at 9-9. Wingate would go on an 8-3 run to put the score at 17-12 and force a Coker timeout, before the Bulldogs would close the set with an 8-3 run out of the timeout. 

Wingate would close out the match with a 26-24 victory in the third set. The teams battled to an early 7-7 tie, before Wingate would win five of the next eight points to go ahead 12-9. The Cobras would battle back from that point to get within four, as the Bulldogs led 20-16 later in the set. Coker would battle back with a 6-2 run to tie the set at 22-22, before Coker held off one set point to tie the match at 24-24. Wingate would take the next two points to seal the victory. 

Emily Everton led the Cobras with 12 kills, while Taylor du Bray also added six kills. Alexis Kopicki posted four kills, while Sierra Harvey also chipped in three kills. Payton Jackson contributed two kills, while Chelsey Blume, Rami Mullen and Lauren Grooms each had one kills on the night. Ashley Carson and Mullen each dished out 11 assists on the night, while Blume and Camryn Tate each registered two assists on the night. Coker totaled five aces on the night, with two each from Olivia Cerick and Everton and another from Carson. Everton, Carson and Gabrielle Milo each posted a team-high eight digs, while Cerick and Tate each contributed seven. Du Bray, Mullen and Jackson each had two digs in the match, while Blume and Maddie Gardner each chipped in one dig on the night. Everton led the blocking effort with two block assists, while Blume and Harvey each had one on the night. 

The Cobras continue their homestand on Friday (Oct. 25) when they host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference play. First serve for that contest is set for 7:00 p.m.
