Cobras Sweep Friday Tri-Match

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College women's volleyball team went 2-0 on Friday, picking up wins over Chowan and Converse in non-conference action. In game one of the tri-match, the Cobras gutted out a 3-2 come-from-behind win over the Chowan University Hawks. In game two, the Navy and Gold earned a 3-0 win over the visiting Converse College Valkyries.

In the opening match, Chowan jumped out to a 2-0 lead, snatching a pair of tight sets, 28-26 and 26-24. However, set three would see the Cobras storm out in front and win the set 25-15. The fourth set was another contest between the two clubs, with the Navy and Gold edging out the win 25-23 and forcing a fifth and decisive set. In the fifth set, the Cobras overcame a early 3-0 deficit to win the set by a score of 15-13 and win the match 3-2.

Bethany Prochnow displayed her dominance in the opening match, picking up 16 kills and racking up a .400 hitting percentage. Alexis Berles finished with a double-double, logging 14 digs and 11 kills. Madison Bingle belted nine kills, to go along with 10 bigs. Greysen Newberry finished the opening match with eight kills, while Christen Bragg and Olivia Veith collected seven kills apiece. Bragg also dished out 32 assists and picked up 22 digs. Taylor du Bray finished with 15 assists and 14 digs. On the defensive end, Missy Reid had 29 digs, Kara Overholt notched 22 digs and Regan Kennen earned 19 digss.  

In the final match of the evening, it was the Cobras coming out victorious once again, this time a 3-0 over Converse by scores of 25-16, 25-15 and 25-17. Newberry and Bragg led the way with six kills each. Bragg also finished with 17 assists and nine digs. Bingle belted five kills, while Berles finished with four. On the defensive end, Overholt notched 13 digs, while Reid finished with 11.

The Cobras begin a three-match road trip on Tuesday (Sept. 13) when they travel to Wingate to take on the Bulldogs. Opening serve is set for 7 p.m.
