Hartsville, S.C. – The Coker volleyball team lost a pair of heartbreaking matches on Saturday afternoon. The first one came at the hands of Conference Carolinas rival Belmont Abbey College. The Crusaders defeated the Lady Cobras 3-2, after Coker battled back from a 2-0 deficit to start the match. Then in the second match of the day the Lady Cobras were downed by Brevard College 3-1, after another come from behind 2-0 deficit.  The losses drop the Lady Cobras to 1-13 overall and 0-4 in the conference.

In the Abbey (2-7, 2-2 Conf. Carolinas) match, the Crusaders won the first two sets 25-19 and 25-20, but then the Lady Cobras stormed back to win sets three and four with scores of 25-20 and 25-23. Then came the fifth and final set; where both teams battled back and forth to start the set, but a late run by the Abbey gave them a 15-11 win.

Leading the Lady Cobras in the Abbey match was Cynallyhia Indriago (Columbia, S.C.) with 10 kills and 17 digs for a double-double, while  Kristin Teets (Columbia, S.C>) also recorded a double-double behind 12 kills and 14 digs. April Griggs (Bishopville, S.C.) netted double digit kills with 10, with Abby Frame (Sylvania, Ohio) and Molly Bookhart (Orangeburg, S.C.) dishing out 23 and 18 assists respectively. Samantha Bryant (North Augusta, S.C.) also added 17 digs for the Lady Cobras.

For Belmont Abbey, Steffanie Holler (Wake Forest, N.C.) and Remick Tiller (Palm City, Fla.) each had 13 kills, with Tiller also leading the team in digs with nine and Holler netting seven digs of her own. Kay Schellenburg (Jacksonville, Fla.) had 41 assists and Julianne Pisano (Erie, Pa.) had eight digs.

The second match of the evening for the Lady Cobras started much like the first with Brevard (7-3) winning the first two sets, 25-16 and 25-12. And then just like in the first match Coker bounced back with a win in the third set, 25-18, but unfortunately for the Lady Cobras that is where the train stopped as the Lady Tornados won the fourth set 25-13.

Teets, Indriago and Griggs each had five kills to pace the Lady Cobras, with Teets also grabbing 12 digs. Frame had 19 assists and 13 digs.

Brevard was led by Brooke Seaman’s (Spring Hill, Fla.) 13 kills, followed by Jamie Atkinson’s (Spartanburg, S.C.) 10 kills and Rebecca Schoonover’s (Palm City, Fla.) match leading 18 digs. Also picking up double digit digs for the Lady Tornados were Caroline Merrill (Hendersonville, N.C.) and Chelsey Trojan (Sacramento, Ca.) with 11 digs apiece, while Brethany Stevenson (Prattville, Ala.) had 37 assists.

Coker returns to action Friday, Sept. 25 when they travel to Anderson, S.C. to face the Lady Trojans of Anderson University at 7:00 p.m.
