Hartsville, SC- With a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Falcons of Pfeiffer University, the Coker Cobras advanced to the semi-finals of the 2007 Conference Carolinas Volleyball Championships on Wednesday night. The win improves the Cobras to 18-13 on the year, while Pfeiffer drops to 20-13 to finish out their season.
Things were intense from the very start as Cobra Fans filled the stands at Timberlake-Lawton Gymnasium and helped cheer the Coker Ladies onto victory. In game one, Coker started strong with a 30-18 win, but Pfeiffer rallied back for a 30-23 game two win. Game three saw the Cobras return the favor, winning 30-23, but the Falcons would not be out done, winning game four 30-23. Game five was a back and fourth grudge match, with neither side willing to concede defeat, but in the end Coker won 15-13.
Leading the Cobras was Megan Haupt (Summerville, SC) with a double-double, 23 kills and 21 digs, while Margaret Madison (Savannah, GA) had 17 kills, seven solo blocks and four block assists. Kristin Teets (Columbia, SC) finished the night with 12 kills, while Courtney Butrym (Columbia, SC) had 27 assists and Natalie Schembra (Hilton Head, SC) had 21 digs. Megan Gordon (Chicago, IL) had 24 assists and four aces, while Kelsey Carlson (Osweego, IL) ended the match with 28 digs.
For the Falcons, Brittany Dickens had 18 kills, seven blocks and three aces, while Lauren Elmore had 12 kills and three blocks. Lauren Spiotta had 11 kills; with Morgan Liebert collected 49 assists and Brittany Poole had 27 digs.
Coker advances to the semi-final match against the winner of the #2 seed Limestone vs. #7 seed St. Andrews match. Match time will be 6:30 p.m. at Anderson University.
