How It Happened
The Cobras found themselves on the wrong end of a heartbreaker in the doubles point. Bellegy and Banning won on Court 1 in a massive 6-0 outing to put the Cobras up, but LR was able to put away courts two and three to take the victory and head up 1-0. In singles, it was a quick start for the Cobras, with both Bellegy and Banning getting dominant straight-set victories on courts one and three, respectively, to put Coker up 2-1.
It was a back-and-forth in the singles matchups, as a loss for the Cobras on court two evened the team score at 2-2. Then, in another dominant Coker win, Macias polished off her opponent in straight sets to make it 3-2. After the Bears tied it up at 3-3 with a Coker loss on four, it was all down to court six.
A rough start turned into an amazing finish on court six, with everyone on the edge of their seats to see who would prevail. It was a 6-2 win in the first set for LR, but Myers came back and evened it up at a set apiece with a 6-4 victory. It all came down to a third-set decision with a win for either side on the line. After falling down a break at 1-3, Myers came back and won four of the next five games (including two breaks) to head up 5-4. In a deciding game, Myers served it out without dropping a point and took the third at 6-4 to seal the 4-3 victory for the Cobras!
Notables
- Last season, the Cobras fell to the Bears 4-3 in the same way that they defeated them today (tied 3-3 and lost in a three-setter). This ultimately kept Coker out of the eight-team SAC playoffs, finishing in ninth just one game behind.
- Bellegy continues her dominant reign, not dropping a set in almost a month
