As preseason dies down and real games are set to begin, head women's soccer coach Dan Muns describes his team as "seasoned, confident and ready for anybody." The third-year coach believes his team is primed for a strong campaign in 2013.
"Coming into this season, we have high expectations for this group," said Muns. "There were periods last fall where we played pretty exceptional soccer. We were just inconsistent, and you can expect that with a young group. Moving into the spring, those young players have become much more tested and focused."
The Cobras will need that focus heading into this year's season, as they prepare to face new competition in the South Atlantic Conference.
"We approached the spring with the mentality of how we would need to play transitioning into the SAC," said Muns. "That's why we chose to play three Division I opponents, and that's why we chose to play teams that were going to make us better in preparation for the SAC. This team started preparing for the conference switch back in November, and now it's time to take the test."
The 2013 Coker roster will consist of 25 players, including 17 returners. When asked about the team's strengths, Muns said he believes that they will be difficult to score on.
"We have a lot of confidence when we're defending; we feel like we can defend against anybody," he said.
Junior goalkeeper Lizz Morris is one of the main contributors to that confidence. In 2012, Morris ranked fourth in the nation among Division II goalies for most saves in a season after she compiled a total of 148 on the year.
Along with Morris, the Coker defense will be led by junior defender Trah Monroe. Monroe is a transfer student from Jones Junior College.
Heading the offense for the Cobras is junior midfielder Millie Rogers, along with sophomores Heather Blaschke, Jalynn Fortt and forward Jenna Pacyna.
The eight newcomers cover each position, but Muns described the majority as "goal scorers." Those that could make an early impact are freshmen Kate Allen, Cassandra Ordonez, Salina Maynard and Jordan Roy.
Coker women's soccer will play its first game at 5 p.m. Sept. 5, at home, against UNC Pembroke.
