Cobras Lose Home Opener, 4-2

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Senior defender Sarah Rountree, and freshman forward Kristen Keenan earned the Cobras first two goals of the season for the Cobras in the Coker Women's Soccer home opener against Young Harris College. The Cobras fell to the Mountain Lions 4-2.

It was a hot and steamy day at Coker College Soccer field as both teams took the field for the Sunday morning kick-off.  Haley Holderfield wasted little time for Young Harris by scoring a goal just five minutes into the game. It wasn't long however, before Holderfield struck again for the Mountain Lionsin the 19th minute putting pressure on the Cobra's and taking a 2-0 lead for Young Harris.

Mishaps by the Coker defense allowed a goal to slip by Coker goalkeeper Lizz Morris midway through the first half, and gave Young Harris a 3-0 lead at the half.

The back- and-forth second half action was a different story for the Cobras, as they came out energized and ready to attack.  Rountree found the back of the net off of a rebound in the 64th minute to put the Cobra's on the board with a score of 3-1

Young Harris responded with a goal of their own, when freshmen Kimmie Tierny launched a shot into the top right corner of the Coker goal to put the Mountain Lions back up by three (4-1).

However, Coker wasn't ready to surrender.  Keenan teed-off from nearly 25-yards out to find nylon in the top right corner in the 86th minute.

With only four minutes remaining in the game, time wasn't on the side of the Cobras as they trailed 4-2.  They battled effortlessly, but to no avail as the clock rolled into the 90th minute to end the game.

Coker will be looking for their first win of the season at home on Thursday, September 6 as they host Catawba.
