Hartsville, S.C. – The Coker women’s soccer team opened their 2009 season on a rough note Thursday night. The Lady Cobras (0-1) fell to Newberry College (1-0) 4-1, starting this season the same way they ended last season,  giving the Coker women 12 straight losses dating back to Oct. 1 of last year.

Newberry put away all four of their goals in the first half, with Amberly Fowler (Taylors, S.C.) netting a pair of goals, while Laura Mottel (North Augusta, S.C.) and Amber Chase (Aiken, S.C.) scored the other two goals. Jesse Langdon (Raleigh, N.C.), Taryn (Bristol (Charlotte, N.C.), Ashley Reetz (Summerville, S.C.), Sara Geisman (Middleburg Heights, Ohio) and Lora Moore (Raleigh, N.C.) each tallied an assist in the match.

It was a much different second half for the Lady Cobras, Sarah Kinsey (WIndermere, Fla.) scored the lone goal with an assists from Ashley Meador (Union, S.C.). While the Coker defense held Newberry scoreless.

Despite allowing four goals, Coker goalkeeper Carrie Hudnell (Goose Creek, S.C.) made nine saves in her first collegiate start.

The Lady Cobras will be looking to snap their losing streak on Sunday, when they travel to Murfreesboro, N.C. to take on the Chowan University Hawks at 2:00 p.m.
